Public views on using AI Risk Stratification for Earlier Cancer Detection
Public perceptions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer risk stratification tools were explored in patient and public involvement and engagement focus groups. Overall, there was strong, but conditional, support for its use. Trust is the key point and participants highlighted the need for transparency, clear data governance, and NHS ownership of data.
Patients who contributed are clear that AI should act as a decision support tool, not replace clinicians. They want to know that there would be clear, non‑alarming communication, defined next steps, and access to human support to reduce anxiety and build confidence.
In any future developments, the successful implementation of AI risk stratification to support earlier detection strategies will depend on patient-centred design, transparent data use, and strong clinical oversight.
