Improving cervical screening participation

Training for sample takers

Analysis by NHS England identified that an additional 42 cervical screening sample takers are needed in North Central London to help meet the national screening target. Together with the North Central London Training Hub, we have organised training for new practice nurses, physician associates and nursing associates to reach this number.

Supporting GP practices with low uptake

Working with GP federations in each of the five North Central London boroughs, primary care nurses will support identified GP practices with low cervical screening coverage in the delivery of activities to improve screening rates. The nurses will also support the delivery of health promotion activities in line with national/regional awareness campaigns both locally and across NCL.

London-wide digital campaign

We work with the other three NHS Cancer Alliances in London to improve cervical screening uptake across the capital. This includes running advertising campaigns on social media and digital radio featuring TV doctor Nighat Arif and former Great British Bake Off contestant, Laura Adlington. Together they provide short, engaging responses on video to bust the myths around cervical screening.

Current attendance for cervical screening among 25 to 49 year olds in London is 58 per cent. The national average for attendance in this age range is 65.8 per cent. Attendance is higher for 50-64 year olds living in London, at 70 per cent.
