Lung health checks come to Wood Green Community Diagnostic Centre

Green text on white background reads How's your lung health? Check.

North London residents taking up the invitation for an NHS Targeted Lung Health Check can now have a lung health check and CT scan at the Community Diagnostic Centre in The Mall Wood Green. This is a third location option in addition to University College Hospital and Finchley Memorial Hospital.

The quick, easy, and free lung check starts with telephone call to gather information on family, medical and smoking history. This helps to assess the risk of lung cancer. The answers given during this conversation could mean that a participant is eligible for a low dose CT scan. The third location has been added to two scan venues, which have been carrying out targeted lung health checks since December 2022. Targeted Lung Health Checks are offered to people aged 55-74 years who currently smoke or used to smoke.

Arjun Nair, UCLH consultant radiologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, says: We are pleased to offer another location for having a lung health check and CT scan. Travelling from one part of north London to another may put people off completing their lung health check. We hope that residents in the Wood Green area or from nearby will take up the offer at the Community Diagnostic Centre. Having a CT scan is quick and painless. If you are offered a scan following your telephone appointment, it’s important that you finish the process. Luckily, most people get the ‘all clear’. But having a scan does mean that early signs of lung cancer can be picked up even when there are no symptoms.”

Most lung cancers are found only when the disease has significantly progressed. In the early stages there are no symptoms that someone would notice. Targeted lung health checks are helping to detect lung cancer earlier. After a scan, any worrying signs are monitored and immediate action to treat is taken when necessary. Early treatment is much more likely to be successful.

Local residents who are eligible for a lung health check, will receive an invitation in the post. The letter contains an appointment for the telephone stage of the check. The time can be re-arranged if it is not suitable.

In North Central London, Targeted Lung Health Checks are managed by the North Central London Cancer Alliance and provided by University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
