Public views on AI risk stratification
Public perceptions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cancer risk stratification tools were explored in patient and public involvement and engagement focus groups. Overall, there was strong, but conditional, support for its use. Trust was the key point. Participants highlighted the need for transparency, clear data governance, and NHS ownership of data.
They were clear that AI should act as a decision support tool, not replace clinicians. They wanted to know that there would be clear, non‑alarming communication, defined next steps, and access to human support to reduce anxiety and to build confidence.
In future developments, successful implementation of AI risk stratification to support earlier detection strategies will depend on patient-centred design, transparent data use, and strong clinical oversight.
